Welcome to the Clean Uganda Programme, a bold initiative to lead and facilitate 30% of Uganda's rural communities towards becoming zero-waste communities by 2035. We aim to make Uganda cleaner, greener, and more sustainable.
The programme comprises three main components: waste management sensitisation, regional recycling plants, and upcycling and collection workstations.
For tailored community projects, we start with waste management education and sensitisation, emphasising proper disposal and recycling while highlighting the negative impacts of improper waste disposal. We target youth and children in households as the "Implementors" for execution and sustainability. The projects allow for identifying and addressing waste management challenges while creating sustainable solutions that benefit the local community.
The programme's second component involves setting up over 200 recycling, upcycling and collection workstations in communities across Uganda. These workstations will allow people to recycle and upcycle waste materials, such as plastic and paper, into valuable products. The workstations will also provide employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy.
The third component of the programme involves setting up regional recycling plants in five different locations in Uganda. These recycling plants will collect and process waste materials to generate green energy, such as biogas and biofuels used to power local communities. The plants will also provide employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy.
For our pilot project, we partnered with the Palle Moeller Foundation to facilitate Kabanga Parish's becoming a zero-waste community. Through the Clean Kabanga Project, we have sensitised over 800 children and youth, equipped them with upcycling and recycling skills in partnership with the ZWAP Foundation, and set up the community's first collection and upcycling centre, which now serves as an income source for the children.
The children have also formed Clean Uganda Clubs (CUC) at their schools. They share their recycling skills and waste management knowledge with schoolmates. They have learnt to make chairs from plastic and paper waste, desk organisers and bags out of paper. The CUC ensures that the clubs' goal lives on even when some pupils/students leave the school.
The collection centre has led to a 90% decrease in plastic bottle pollution in the area and an increased income for the youths who run it. With more funding, we plan to set up a recycling centre where waste is broken down for reuse.
